extreme beetle damage

In late July, mobs of hungry Japanese beetles appear on certain plants. They're now mostly gone, but they've left their mark in the garden:

They seemed particularly fond of our purple sweet potato vine. It would appear that sometimes in destruction there is an unearthly beauty.
