...critters and peoples were here...
Woohoo! Today is the winter heat wave everyone’s been waiting for! It was nearly balmy today. I was just outside without a coat. It was simply lovely!
The snow is melting before my eyes. As it goes, all of the animal tracks and human footprints expand and melt down to the bare ground; losing detail, but showing up in sharper contrast. This photo is just a small sample of the crisscross patterns showing up all through our yard.
A lingering cover of snow gives a startling picture of just how much traffic goes through the yard over the course of a week or so. Most revealing are the deer tracks. Although we have only once seen the deer themselves, they obviously make a nightly trek through our front yard and into the back, following a roughly regular route that occasionally strays toward a shrub or tree that must have looked tasty in the distance, but shows no outright sign of ‘nibblage’ that I can see.
The snow also reveals a large amount of traffic by what must be crows, who seem very interested in our back deck. We do see a small family of them milling about underneath the bird feeder; but we’ve never seen them this close to the house. The snow there is completely trampled with hundreds of crow tracks. Some of them go right up to the back door. Crows are very intelligent birds; so I can’t help but wonder what they’re up to. There's no obvious food source in that spot. What could be so interesting for them there?

Samantha likes to look out the back door. I wonder if she’s seen something we haven’t. Poor dear. Have the crows been taunting you? I’m sure you’d love to tell us if you could.
